It is with much enthusiasm that we welcome the promise of a successful 2024 planting and growing season.
Along with our traditional competitions, ranging from Vegetable and Flower Gardening, Heritage Homes and Rural Cemeteries, this year we offer a BRAND NEW COMPETITION, unlike any of our other competitions. The Community Spirit - People's Choice Award will be awarded based on encouraging Community Members to vote for their Rural Town or Rural Municipality via our website. At stake is an award of $1000.00 each for the Rural Town and Rural Municipality that wins, along with the coveted title of best Rural Town and best Rural Municipality in PEI. The Prince Edward Island Rural Beautification Society is grateful for the generosity of donors, community groups, corporate sponsors and the PEI Government for their continued support.
Rural Prince Edward Island has been noted for its natural beauty and for its lovely cared-for homes, lawns, gardens, cemeteries, and community buildings. Visitors to the Island have often wondered if there is a law that requires rural Islanders to keep their properties neat and attractive. This was not always the case. After the Second World War, many farm and community properties were in a sad state of neglect and disrepair.
In just a few years, however, a small volunteer organization started by Lt.-Col. E. W. Johnstone began transforming the look of the countryside. For over 75 years, the PEI Rural Beautification Society has encouraged countless Islanders to plant gardens and to paint, repair and improve their homes, farms & properties. The PEI Rural Beautification Society has been a leader in enhancing the rural landscape of our beloved Province. Prize money totalling more than $15,000 is awarded each year.
